Types of Mail Enabled Groups in Microsoft 365
Here at Core4ce we primarily use three types of mail-enabled groups depending on the requirements, Microsoft 365 Groups, Distribution Groups, and Shared Mailboxes.
A Microsoft 365 Group is a robust collaboration platform allowing members to have access to a shared inbox with an email address, shared files leveraging SharePoint, and can also include a shared calendar, OneNote, Stream and a Planner. Groups will show up at the bottom of a user's Core4ce mailbox in Outlook for easy access. Administration is delegated to the Group Owner, meaning members can be added or removed, file permissions can be granted, and teams channels can be created by the Group owner.
A Distribution Group is an email address that, when sent to, delivers the message to multiple recipients' inboxes. Distribution groups have no centralized location for mail, but members of the group can reply to messages as the group's email address rather than as themselves. A ticket to IT is required to add or remove members.
A Shared Mailbox is an email address that multiple people can log into and manage. While the mailbox has its own password, users with access to the shared mailbox will log in using their personal credentials. Emails will persist in the shared inbox unless members delete them. A ticket to IT is required to add or remove members.
